Shank Prakshalana - what is it?

Introduction

Shank Prakshalana, also referred to as Shankhaprakshalana or Kunjal Kriya, is an advanced yogic cleansing technique aimed at purifying the digestive tract and enhancing overall health. Process of Shank Prakshalana

Shank Prakshalana involves a specific sequence of actions designed to cleanse the entire gastrointestinal tract. The key steps include:

  1. Preparation: The practice typically begins with a warm-up, including gentle stretching and pranayama (breath control) to prepare the body for the cleansing process. A study by Michalsen et al. (2015) indicates that such preparatory exercises enhance the effectiveness of detoxification methods.

  2. Salt Water Ingestion: The practitioner ingests a specific amount of warm saline water, generally mixed with non-iodized salt. The osmotic properties of salt water stimulate peristalsis and promote the flushing of the gastrointestinal system. Research has shown that saline solutions can effectively stimulate bowel movements and aid in detoxification (Ghaffari et al., 2017).

  3. Asanas: Following the consumption of saline water, a series of yoga postures (asanas) are performed. 1. Improved Nutrient Bioavailability
Phytate Breakdown: White flour contains phytic acid, which binds essential minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium, making them less available for absorption. During fermentation, especially sourdough fermentation, naturally occurring bacteria (like Lactobacillus) produce enzymes that break down phytic acid, freeing up these minerals for better absorption.
Increased Folate and B Vitamins: Fermentation encourages the growth of certain bacteria that can synthesize B vitamins, including folate (vitamin B9). This can increase the content of these vitamins in the final product.

Decreased Glycemic Index: The slow fermentation process leads to the creation of organic acids like acetic acid, which can slow the rate at which sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream. This helps lower the glycemic index (GI) of fermented white flour products, making them less likely to cause rapid blood sugar spikes.
3. Improved Gut Health
Probiotic Benefits: While most probiotics do not survive the high heat of baking, fermented bread (e.g., sourdough) contains beneficial metabolites, such as organic acids, that promote a healthy gut microbiome. These metabolites support the growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract, indirectly aiding digestion and immune function.

Lowered FODMAPs: Fermentation reduces the content of certain short-chain carbohydrates known as FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols), which can cause digestive discomfort in sensitive individuals. "The pandemic coincided with a period of fifty years from the recognition of a communicating mucosal immune system. John Bienenstock called this “The Common Mucosal Immune System” (CMS). Lessons relevant to Covid on the relevance of mucosal immunity to both the pathogenesis of disease and vaccination strategies were slowly learnt. Early in the pandemic, protracted changes in the intestinal microbiota were noted that correlated with the progress and severity of infection, and later were linked to development of post-Covid syndrome. The purpose of this review is to pull together through the lens of Covid-19 how a viral infection of the respiratory mucosal space connects with systemic immunity on one hand, and mucosa-related microbiota on the other, within a single integrated mucosal system, to create a carpet of protection. Infection within this unified system can induce changes in balance between microbiota and the relevant local immune response at distant mucosal sites, which in turn, can impact the outcome of the inciting infection in either a deleterious or beneficial manner. Within the broader framework that includes systemic immunity, outcomes of both infection and vaccination, reflect a controlled balance determined by downregulation via suppressor T cells seeded from mucosal sites of infection. The integrity of this comprehensive system has been queried based on regional differences. Such a view fails to recognise mechanisms of critical outcomes of Covid and its management, and opportunities for innovative therapeutic intervention. Variations throughout the mucosal apparatus such as “offsite” generation of airway immunity in the gut and differences in microbial characteristics of microbiomes, reflect adaptation to local influences without compromising the essential qualities of a global mucosal protection system: communication, integration, and cooperation. A central unifying factor for a “Mucosal Immune Microbiome Protection System” or MIMPS, is the idea that a single set of gut-associated lymphoid tissues characterised by specialised M cells, samples appropriate microbiome to generate global mucosal immune defence."

As a chicken keeper, I can tell you that keeping chickens is a fun and rewarding experience. Not only do they provide fresh eggs, but they also offer numerous health, environmental, and mental benefits. Health Benefits of Eating Eggs: Eggs are a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. They contain antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for our health. Eggs also help to regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. By keeping chickens, you have access to fresh eggs, which are much healthier than store-bought ones. Reducing Waste in Landfills: Keeping chickens allows us to reduce waste in landfills by using kitchen scraps as chicken feed. Chickens love to eat fruit and vegetable scraps, bread, and pasta. By giving our chickens these leftovers, we reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, which is great for the environment. Pest Control in Gardens: 


Chickens are great at controlling pests in gardens. They love to peck at insects, such as beetles and grubs, which can damage our plants. By letting chickens roam in the garden, we can naturally control pests and keep our plants healthy. Mental Benefits of Taking Care of Live Animals: Taking care of live animals has numerous mental benefits. It can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and can also improve our overall well-being. Spending time with chickens is also a great way to bond with family and friends. In conclusion, keeping chickens is a great way to improve our health, reduce waste in landfills, control pests in gardens, and provide mental benefits. It's a fun and rewarding experience that the whole family can enjoy.
